Heuermann Beach victims murder
The case began in May 2010 when Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old sex worker, vanished after leaving a client’s residence on foot near Gilgo Beach. She said she feared for her life when she dialed 911 for assistance, and she was never heard from again. Gilbert can be heard warning the 911 operator over and over that “somebody’s after me” in the terrifying conversation that was made public. Additionally, she can be heard fighting with a man, whom she addresses as Mike, who seems to be urging her to get back into a car. At one point, she can be heard inquiring as to whether or not he is “going to kill” her. “It’s a conspiracy to kill me,” she informs the dispatcher.
Police found the bones of another woman while searching a dense forest near the shore for Gilbert. Three more victims’ bodies were discovered nearby in a few of days. By April 2011, the remains of ten victims—eight women, one man, and one toddler—had been discovered. The body of Gilbert was discovered in December 2011. Her cause of death is hotly debated; officials have long maintained that she drowned accidentally when escaping the client’s house and that her death has nothing to do with the serial killer or killers.
Her mother thinks she was killed, despite the fact that an independent autopsy ordered by her family determined that she died from strangulation. Like Gilbert, sex workers made up the majority of the victims attacked. Over the years, many explanations have been proposed, but no one has ever been prosecuted for the killings.
Authorities have previously stated that they think the deaths over a 20-year period could be the result of three distinct serial killers. Until this year, when Suffolk Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison swore to finally solve the case and bring the killer or killers to prison, the case seemed to fall cold for several years.
With “a pair of fresh eyes,” the recently appointed commissioner expressed confidence in his ability to bring the cold case “over the finish line.” He formed a specific taskforce for the matter. Although it is uncertain if the remains of at least 11 victims were all left by the same murderer, they were discovered around the Gilgo Beach region. Many were either New York City workers or prostitutes who advertised their services on Craigslist.
The first victim identified was Melissa Barthelemy, whose body was found on December 11, 2010, along Ocean Parkway, while searching for Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old New Jersey sex worker who disappeared after seeing a client in Oak Park and making a terrifying 911 call in which she expressed fears for her life.
Two days later on 13 December, the remains of three further victims — Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Megan Waterman and Amber Lynn Costello – were recovered near by. It was known that all three of these ladies advertised escort services on Craigslist. One of the Gilgo Beach Four, Brainard-Barnes, was last seen alive in New York City in early June 2007, and Costello was last seen leaving her North Babylon home one day in early September 2010.
Early in June 2010, Waterman was last observed alive at a Holiday Inn Express in Hauppauge. After a period of seven months, on July 26, 2011, Jessica Taylor’s remains were discovered in a Manorville forested area while Gilbert was still being searched for. In New York City, Taylor was employed as an escort.
In 2000, Valerie Mack, an escort as well, was last observed alive in Philadelphia. Her remains were discovered twice, in Manorville in 2000 and Oak Beach in 2011, but genetic genealogy was not used until 2020 to identify her.
On 4 August 2023, Long Island officials reported that another victim – known as Jane Doe 7 or Fire Island Jane Doe – ha finally been identified. 34-year-old Karen Vergata was employed as an escort in Manhattan in 1996 when she was last seen alive.
In 1996, her legs were discovered at Fire Island’s Blue Point Beach, Davis Park, wrapped in plastic. On April 11, 2011, which was almost precisely 15 years later, her skull was discovered along Ocean Parkway. Officials declined to say in a press conference revealing her name whether or not Mr. Heuermann was connected to her murder. There are still some unidentified victims. In April 2011, the skeletal remains of an Asian male, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall, with poor dental health, and ages ranging from 17 to 23 years, were discovered near Ocean Parkway. It is thought that he passed away five to ten years ago.
The remains of a toddler girl were found that same day. Later on, it was discovered that she was the daughter of the female victim, also named “Peaches,” whose body was discovered in Nassau County.
Heuermann Arrest
The wife of Mr. Heuermann, who was out of state when the killings occurred, is identified by forensic investigation as the owner of the female hairs discovered at three crime locations. When Barthelemy vanished in July 2009, Heuermann’s wife was in Iceland; she was in Maryland when Waterman vanished in June 2010, and she was in New Jersey when Costello vanished in September of the same year. The burlap, tape, and vehicle(s) used in the killings, according to the prosecution, most likely originated from Mr. Heuermann’s home or were transferred from his clothes. In addition, Heuermann is the main suspect in the death of “Gilgo Four” member Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
