Mariana Zeller Documentary

Van Zeller moved to London after graduating from Columbia, hoping to work for a documentary producer and cover the Iraq War. She moved to London and studied Arabic at Damascus University in Syria in order to better pursue stories in the Middle East. Her freelance documentaries from Syria aired on PBS’s Frontline/World, the CBC, and Channel 4 over the next two years (United Kingdom). She began working for Current TV in 2005 as a correspondent and producer for the Vanguard documentary series.

The September 11th attacks occurred one month after she moved to New York City. A producer from SIC Notcias, where she had previously interned, contacted her that morning and directed her to meet a news crew atop the CBS Building in Midtown Manhattan, where she would go live in three hours. She was told before going on the air, “Make yourself ready. The entire country of Portugal is watching you.”

She claims she spent two years after graduation working at SIC, the first and largest Portuguese private television network at the time. She began her career in the main network’s travel and international departments before moving on to SIC Notcias, the network’s news channel.
