Charlie Coates is portrayed by McMenamin in Orange is the New Black.Charlie Coates used to work as a donut shop employee and a prison officer at Litchfield Penitentiary. The two become friends while Tiffany Doggett is being escorted on van duty, but their friendship rapidly turns toxic.
Coates strikes me as being quite kind and well-mannered, occasionally even passive and complacent. He does, however, have a cruel streak, enjoying the opportunity to degrade and humiliate Doggett. He then rapes Doggett because he thinks that her incapacity to object or say “no” to the attack equals a resounding “yes.” It is revealed that Coates has compassion for the prisoners.
In Season Four, after Gina sustains a serious cut to her hand and Luschek is condescending, Coates angrily orders him to do his job and assist Gina.He is revealed to have some anger management issues in Season Six, though, and he even hurts Pennsatucky. He’s a taller, leaner man with short brown hair and facial hair. His eyes are big. Pennsatucky sustains a scar on his forehead following the van accident. In season six, he grows out his hair more.
