As a UNICEF consultant in Rwanda in the late 1980s, she assisted in the establishment of Duterimbere, a microfinance institution.
Before creating Acumen in 2001, Novogratz developed and led the Rockefeller Foundation’s Philanthropy Workshop and Next Generation Leadership initiatives. She is a member of the Harvard Business School’s Social Enterprise Initiative as well as UNICEF. She also serves on the boards of the Aspen Institute, the Pakistan Business Council Centre of Excellence in Responsible Business (CERB), and the Council on Foreign Relations, as well as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton appointed Novogratz to the State Department’s Foreign Affairs Policy Board.

It was a sweater she had owned and donated to Goodwill a decade before; it was hers, with her name on the tag.
