Hunter appeared on CNN’s Paula Zahn Now on January 31, 2007, in an article about atheists in America. During the open forum, she proposed: “Maybe if they [atheists] had Hallmark Cards, they wouldn’t feel so isolated. We’ve got Christmas cards. We now have Kwanzaa cards. Perhaps they should get some atheist cards and get the ball rolling so that more people can get involved in what they’re doing. They should stop talking and let people do their jobs.”
In response to Donald Trump’s comments about Barack Obama, Hunter called for a boycott of the television show Celebrity Apprentice on her Facebook page on April 11, 2011. In a later interview, she stated: “Many of us were enraged and outraged by Trump’s remarks, and I wanted to remind us that we have power. We can do more than grumble and complain.”
Hunter mocked Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on MSNBC in 2012, saying, “[M]aybe [Mitt Romney] isn’t running for the presidency of the United States, maybe he’s running for the presidency of ‘Caucasia-stan,’ or some place that doesn’t have anyone of color in it.” Following the murder of nine people at the Mother Emmanuel Church in Charleston, SC, Hunter wrote a petition on MoveOn.org in 2015 calling for the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina statehouse. Within three days, 500,000 people had signed the petition, making it the second fastest to 500,000 in MoveOn.org’s history. Governor Nikki Haley later announced that the flag would be removed. Following this announcement, the South Carolina state legislature voted to remove the flag.
