Hunter mocked Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on MSNBC in 2012, saying, “[M]aybe [Mitt Romney] isn’t running for the presidency of the United States, maybe he’s running for the presidency of ‘Caucasia-stan,’ or some place that doesn’t have anyone of color in it.” Following the murder of nine people at the Mother Emmanuel Church in Charleston, SC, Hunter wrote a petition on MoveOn.org in 2015 calling for the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina statehouse. Within three days, 500,000 people had signed the petition, making it the second fastest to 500,000 in MoveOn.org’s history. Governor Nikki Haley later announced that the flag would be removed. Following this announcement, the South Carolina state legislature voted to remove the flag.
