He developed into a fishmonger, serving as the public face of the seafood supplier and assisting in the expansion of the brand beyond its wholesale roots.
Gomes was listed as one of the “50 People to Watch” by San Diego Magazine in 2011 thanks to his charm and knowledge of seafood. He opened the Seafood Education and Nutrition Center at Catalina Offshore Products in 2012; it’s a fish market that draws people from all over the world, including media and celebrity chefs. In addition, he had started the nonprofit evening series Collaboration Kitchen, which promoted seafood education.
