Phil Robertson Football
Phil excelled in football, baseball, and track in high school, earning him a football scholarship to Louisiana Tech in Ruston. He was the Bulldogs’ first-string quarterback, ahead of Terry Bradshaw, the first overall pick in the 1970 NFL Draft. Robertson was a year younger than Bradshaw and started for two seasons in 1966 and 1967. He completed 179 of 411 passes for 2,237 yards and 12 touchdowns while at Louisiana Tech, but he also had 34 interceptions. Despite his professional potential, Robertson was more engaged in hunting.
When Paul Harvey approached him about playing professionally with the Washington Redskins, he declined owing to difficulties with hunting and the sport’s emphasis on keeping his scholarship. He went on to get a bachelor’s degree in physical education as well as a master’s degree in education.
