Maggie Beer AO is a chef, author, restaurateur, and food maker from Australia now along with Matt Moran, is a judge on The Great Australian Bake Off and a regular on MasterChef Australia.

She dropped out of school at 14 to help support her family, and she worked in a variety of professions before returning to Sydney in 1968, including as a lift operator in a New Zealand department store and as an assistant to a senior geophysicist for British Petroleum in Libya. Her love of food dates back to her upbringing, when eating was acceptable and cooking was the norm.

During a European tour in her early twenties, her first paid culinary job was at a Scottish sailing school. Beer was named Telstra South Australian Business Woman of the Year in 1997. On January 1, 2001, Beer was given the Centenary Medal for services to Australian society via cuisine and writing. Maggie received the Australian Publishers Association’s Illustrated Book of the Year award in 2008 for Maggie’s Harvest.

In the 2022 Australia Day Honours, Beer was elevated to Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for “distinguished service to the tourism and hospitality industries as a cook, restaurateur, and author, as well as to aged welfare.”
