Dylan Blake, the main character in Open Heart, is on a crime spree following the disappearance of her father. She and her ‘team’ break into people’s homes and find her father’s apartment, where she finds his medicines. She meets new friends, Wes Silver and Mikayla Walker, and becomes embroiled in the investigation into her father’s disappearance. Dylan keeps her blog, Pinbler, updated with clues as she searches for his location. In Last Things First, she uses the Bling Ring to break into someone’s home and vandalize it. When her mother brings Rayna to the hospital, she gets jailed. Dylan and London walk to Open Heart three months later to talk about volunteering. Dylan agrees to help if their father is present, but London changes the subject.
They enter the volunteer room, where Dylan is informed by Jared Malik, the head of the Youth Volunteer Program, that she is late. Jared informs Wes Silver that he oversees the program, and Dylan meets Mikayla Walker. They exit the room, allowing Dylan, Mikayla, and Wes to go about their business. Dylan is told she is only here to stay out of trouble and complete her sentence. Wes advises her to look for Jared and invites her to Open Heart.
