Scannell began working for CNN in 2017 and was assigned to the team covering the special counsel’s investigation into the 2016 presidential election in Washington, D.C.
Scannell worked as an investigative correspondent and, most recently, as the US senior finance correspondent for the Financial Times before joining CNN. Scannell uncovered articles regarding tax evasion schemes, cyber security breaches, and widespread investigations into insider trading during her tenure at the Financial Times. Along with conducting in-depth investigations, Scannell also spoke with a number of prominent government officials, including Sally Yates, the Deputy Attorney General, who was fired.
Scannell formerly worked for the Wall Street Journal for almost a decade, during which time she disclosed oversight flaws at the Securities and Exchange Commission and the manner in which the organization routinely ignored warning signs that would have brought attention to the Madoff Ponzi scheme. She worked for years as the federal courts reporter for the Times, covering several high-profile criminal trials involving big names like Enron and Martha Stewart. Scannell covered private equity companies as well.
Scannell started working as a journalist at CNNfn. For the FT’s coverage of the flash crash trader, Scannell was awarded the 2015 Society of American Business Editors and Writers prize for breaking news. She was a part of the Wall Street Journal team that was nominated for a 2009 Pulitzer Prize in the National Affairs category for their coverage of the financial crisis.
