In the early years of primary school, Xie took up competitive horseback riding with the goal of becoming an equestrian champion and touring the country. Throughout her career, she won numerous events. Most notably, she won first place in the tiny junior hunter 16–17 division at the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) competition. Xie made the decision to give up contests at the age of 20 in order to focus on a career in the fashion industry.
