He became a vegetarian as a teenager, and then a raw-food vegan for nearly ten years. Daniel was convinced that animal foods were necessary for a healthy human diet after reading a book written by a dentist. He gave up veganism. However, he was already a speaker at vegan events, which became a problem for him later when he would go on stage to speak about vegan diet problems. He was soon kicked out of the vegan community as a result of this.

After leaving veganism, he began foraging and was mentored by Arthur Haines, a botanist who runs the Canton, Maine-based Delta Institute of Natural History. He eventually launched his ‘ReWild Yourself Podcasts,’ interviewing experts in the field and exploring the hunter-gatherer lifestyle. He later learned how to hunt after deciding he wanted to do it seriously. He co-authored his first book, ‘Pine Pollen: Ancient Medicine for a New Millennium,’ with Stephen Harrod Buhner in 2012.
