Dash was Jay-manager Z’s business partner at Roc-A-Fella Records, and he prepared a $19 million tour for Jay-Z in 1999. Their friendship was strained by two following episodes. The first occurred in 2004, when Roc-A-Fella Records was bought by Def Jam Recordings (which had previously only controlled half of the firm), after which Jay-Z agreed to become president of Def Jam. Then, in late 2005, Jay-Z purchased Dash’s stake in Rocawear.
Dash’s involvement with Blind Debit, a fingerprint payment application created by Dez White, was disclosed in April 2014. Dash established DD172, a media conglomerate that includes America Nu, a magazine; VNGRD79, a web design agency; and BluRoc Records, a record label subsidiary. It also has an art gallery.

Dash’s ex-wife, Rachel Roy, accused him of domestic abuse and applied for a restraining order in April 2015. Roy was granted primary custody of their daughters. The judge issued a three-year restraining order against Dash to Roy and her kids. Dash then filed a $2.5 million claim against Roy, claiming damages for allegedly mismanaging their joint fashion venture, Royale Etenia. Dash resolved a lawsuit he filed against filmmaker Lee Daniels in 2018 for $5 million in order to retrieve a $2 million investment with interest. Lee received financial assistance from Dash early in his career and is said to have failed to repay him despite his later success.
Dash was arrested in November 2019 for failing to pay more than $400,000 in child support. Dash was detained on two warrants while in New York City for an unrelated Federal Court hearing. The first warrant was issued in April 2015 in the case of Cindy Morales in the Supreme Court of New York County; he owes $62,553 since 2012. The second warrant was issued in the Bronx Family Court case of Rachel Roy in March 2019. In 2015, he was ordered to pay her $341,991 plus $25,000 in attorney expenses. Dash is said to have paid more than $1 million to be released.
