Comstock began her career as an intern at a public radio station after realizing she “want[ed] to tell stories about science.” She later moved on to public-access television in Washington, D.C. and local television reporting in Virginia. In the middle of the 1980s, she relocated to NBC as a PR coordinator.
She worked for CBS and Turner Broadcasting before being lured back to NBC News for a turnaround initiative when the division was on the verge of collapse due to a “fake news” crisis. Comstock’s performance led to Jack Welch recognizing him and promoting him to higher positions inside GE, the company that controlled NBC at the time.
Comstock took over as GE’s chief marketing and commercial officer in 2003, becoming the company’s first CMO in over two decades. In 2005, Comstock launched Ecomagination, an endeavor aimed at encouraging GE and its clients to have a positive environmental impact. She began serving as President of Integrated Media at NBC Universal in 2006, where she was in charge of ad sales, marketing, and research.
She also oversaw the creation of Hulu and directed the company’s digital initiatives, which included Peacock Equity and the acquisition of iVillage.com. In the end, Comstock was elevated to GE Vice Chair. She left this position in October 2017 to concentrate on other opportunities. Comstock’s debut book, “Imagine It Forward: Courage, Creativity, and the Power of Change,” was published in September 2018.
