He is one of the first openly gay South Asian men to appear on a major show, as well as one of the first openly Muslim gay men to appear on Western television. Naturally, Tan, his memoir, was published in June 2019.
France went to Hall Cross School and then Doncaster College, where he studied fashion before moving to Manchester and then London.

France is currently married to Rob France, a pediatric nurse, and illustrator, and they live in Salt Lake City, Utah. France married his husband twice, once in London and again after marriage became legal in New York City. Tan France Baby (Why does Tan France cover his baby’s face?)
The couple has a son Ismail, who was born in July 2021. The couple used a surrogate to make their dreams come true, but the road to a larger family was not without its own challenges. However, when it comes to social media, the well-known fashion guru prefers to conceal Ismail’s identity by covering his face in photos. France explained that the desire to protect Ismail’s identity online initially caught him off guard.
France joins the likes of Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, Chris Pratt, and Jenna Dewan in covering their children’s faces in social media photos. Meanwhile, other celebrities choose not to feature their children on social media at all. The desire of France and Rob to protect Ismail’s identity may have also played a role in their decision to homeschool Ismail. The couple is constructing a schoolroom in their new Salt Lake City home for a community school that will also include the children of family friends.
Tan France Family
He was born and raised in the English county of South Yorkshire to Muslim Pakistani parents. France discusses in his memoir how he felt alienated as a result of his upbringing in a strict Muslim household where homosexuality was frowned upon, the lack of representation of his community in the media, and his personal experiences with physical and verbal racism.
France’s fascination with fashion began at a young age, influenced by the Disney clothing produced in his grandparents’ denim factory in Bury, England. By the age of thirteen, he had learned how to construct and embellish a denim jacket. He allegedly learned in 2019 that his grandfather was forced to close the factory due to the products being Disney knockoffs.
Tan France Clothing Line
France began working in the United States in 2008, first in New York City and immigrated to the United States in 2015. France was the company director at Shade Clothing before launching his own fashion label, Kingdom & State, in 2011. The brand included clothing designed to meet Mormon clothing guidelines, a group that made up a sizable population in Utah, where France lived.
He later founded two smaller clothing companies. ModCloth and Forever 21 both purchased France’s designs. For many years, the designs were displayed on the website and in stores under the brand name. In 2016, he co-founded fashion designer, and CEO of Rachel Parcell Inc, a clothing line sold at Nordstrom.
Tan France Books
France’s memoir, Naturally Tan, was published in June 2019 by St. Martin’s Press. It was a New York Times best-seller. It is about his experience growing up “gay in a traditional Muslim family, as one of the few people of colour in Doncaster, England”. The memoir begins with his childhood in England, where racist incidents were common, such as having to run back to school to avoid being beaten up by racist thugs. The book then moves on to more serious subjects, such as colorism in South Asia and the Islamophobia he experienced before and after the 9/11 attacks.
Tan France Fashion
In 2016, he co-founded fashion designer, and CEO of Rachel Parcell Inc, a clothing line sold at Nordstrom. France officially retired after selling his businesses, intending to start a family with his husband, but he was later contacted by Netflix. Through his role as the fashion expert on Queer Eye, which premiered in February 2018, he began his career as a media figure. France appeared in Taylor Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down” music video in 2019.
He also appeared in a special charity edition of The Great British Bake Off in 2020, raising funds for Stand Up To Cancer, and was the episode’s winner. It was also announced that France would co-host the new Netflix series Next In Fashion with Alexa Chung that year. France revealed in interviews with ITV’s This Morning and NPR that he had sold all three of his businesses after starting work for Netflix.
